Thanks for the nice article. I am also reading "a more secure drupal [multisite] install" by justin hileman and attempting to decide which approach is better. See his article here:

His approach does require PHP files, but they are really simple and I think they would not break your portability requirements.
Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts about the security of your method. I hope to begin installing Drupal today. :)
