Great explanation - it's the way to go. I am trying to do something similar with Symlinks on a Linux hosted system, but Drupal and/or Apache are having trouble following some of the Symlinks even though they are enabled in Apache (+Symlinks).
For example if I point Apache to a top level directory that is a Symlink nothing seems to work. I also Symlinked the "files" directory and many Drupal modules (e.g. for photos, videos) seem unable to follow the link and find their content. Replace the Symlink by the files directory and the problem goes away.
Any tips or hints about sym link pitfalls you may have experienced would be highly appreciated.
